QABA 1.3

Quantitative Acid Base Analyser

The Quantitative Acid Base Analyser (QABA) is a clinical tool designed primarily for Anaesthetic and ICU Consultants and Registrars, although it may also be beneficial for other healthcare and veterinary professionals.

This application facilitates the rapid input of blood gas results, enabling users to analyze acid-base disturbances based on the refined methodology proposed by P. Stewart in 1978.

Users can input levels of sodium, potassium, chloride, pH, CO2, allowing the app to compute three independent variables that influence blood plasma pH: CO2, Strong Ion Difference (SID), and Weak Acids (Atot). Notably, Atot requires at least albumin or total protein levels for accurate calculations. The app also presents the Net Unmeasured Ions (NUI), an innovative enhancement over the Strong Ion Gap used in Stewart's original equations, providing a comparable measure to the traditional Anion Gap.

To further refine its analytical capabilities, QABA accepts additional parameters such as phosphate, ionized calcium, magnesium, sulphate, lactate, urate, albumin, and total protein levels.

This application is based on version 11.6 of the P Lloyd 'Quantitative Acid Base Analysis' utilized at Hawkes Bay Hospital in New Zealand. It was developed by Dr. C Donald under the supervision of Intensivists Dr. M Park and Dr. R Freebairn.
